Artist Statement
My research-based art practice examines how humans relate to natural, built, and ideological environments. Working primarily with photography and expanded photographic processes, I investigate how climate change, political systems, and social hierarchies manifest in landscapes and architecture. I ground my work in long-term, site-specific research and material experimentation, positioning photography as a visual medium and a critical research tool at the intersection of art, the humanities, and science.

Each project develops through cycles of fieldwork and studio work. Research methods include archival study, site walks, interviews, and dialogue with experts and local communities, which inform the selection of locations. I photograph these sites with medium- or large-format analog cameras. The slow, deliberate nature of this approach allows for sustained attention to time, materiality, and chance.
In the studio, I employ experimental techniques such as alternative exposure and development, solarization, heat treatment, laser etching, and collaging. These materially driven interventions reflect conditions of instability, erosion, and fragmentation, mirroring the environmental and socio-political systems under investigation. The resulting works function as visual records of change, absence, and accumulation over time.

My international background is central to my practice. Having lived and worked in Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States, I approach place as historically layered, politically charged, and culturally contingent. This transnational perspective is most fully articulated in my second monograph, Die Ab- und Anwesenheit der Berliner Mauer / The Absence and Presence of the Berlin Wall, published by DISTANZ in German and English editions in August 2025.

112 km (2021-22) archival pigment print, 70 x 105 cm / 27.56 x 41.33 inches (Fall 2021 series)“The Berlin Wall fell in 1989; in 1990, Germany was reunited with the integration of the former German Democratic Republic into the West German political and economic system. The physical division may be forgotten and invisible in many places. However, its lingering effects can still be felt: the goal to create a united Germany with a collective identity has yet to be achieved. Gesche Würfel’s (b. Bremerhaven, 1976; lives and works in New York) most recent photographic work investigates these divisions.

The Absence and Presence of the Berlin Wall explores the topography along the country’s division and proposes a new way of thinking about the legacy of the wall: Würfel traveled the complete course of the former Berlin Wall, stopping every 2.8 kilometers—in a nod to the 28-year history of the Wall—to document the present-day state of affairs at the line of separation in Berlin and Brandenburg. Complementing the photographs, created specifically for this book project, of scenes where the city’s division was reality, the artist, urban planner, and sociologist gathered materials from the Stasi Records Archives, the East German secret police, and spoke to witnesses, including political prisoners, former guest workers, and representatives of German politics and culture about their recollections. Würfel paints a multifaceted panorama and portrait of a Germany whose division and reunification continue to shape the country profoundly” (DISTANZ).The production of the book has been supported by NYU Tisch Dean’s Faculty Grants, NYU Tisch Creative Research Publishing Grant, the NYU Center for the Humanities, the Puffin Foundation, UA Ruhr, and private donations through NYFA Fiscal Sponsorship and Kickstarter.
I created the project during my participation in the International Studio Program at Künstlerhaus Bethanien from 2021-22 and the summers of 2023 and 2024. It was sponsored by:

This project consists of three parts:
- 61 composite images. I cycled along the 160-km long Berlin Wall Trail starting from the Brandenburg Gate, and every 2.8 km – representing the 28 years of the Wall’s history - I photographically recorded those places where the divided city used to be reality. I took six photos at each location (front, back, left, right, sky, and ground) and combined them as composites in Photoshop.
-Interviews with and portraits of twenty-seven Berlin Wall witnesses. I also photographed the witnesses’ objects relating to their memories of the Berlin Wall and German reunification.
- 23 Collages of Berlin Wall archive images from the Stasi Records Archive (Archive of the Ministry of State Security of the former German Democratic Republic). I cut out the death strip from each panorama image and collaged the remains of the images to envision new landscapes without the Wall.
- 134 cut-out death strips/Berlin Wall pieces. -134 Scanograms of the Berlin Wall pieces.

“Forests in the Anthropocene” is a photography project that explores the effects of human-made climate change on forests. Forests are major carbon sinks and remain one of the most critical ecosystems to preserve, covering 31% of the globe’s land surface, with half of the world’s forests having their homes in the Russian Federation, Brazil, Canada, the United States of America, and China[1].
Forests are essential for biodiversity, water and oxygen supply, food production, livelihoods, and climate change mitigation. However, deforestation and degradation continue at alarming rates, which, alongside increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, lead to increasing average and extreme temperatures across the globe.
Depending on their geographic location, trees face a variety of climate change impacts from rising temperatures to drought, fires, invasive pests, flooding, storms, sea level rise, or saltwater intrusion. Using 4x5 film and a large format camera, I photographed forests in two U.S. states and climate zones (North Carolina and Massachusetts) to show the impacts of global warming.

I used specific photographic processes to represent each impact. For example, I invoke warming through solarizing prints in the darkroom; drought with solarized prints roasted in a kiln; sea level rise by mirroring gelatin silver prints; saltwater intrusion by adding sea salt from the North Carolina coast. The resulting photographs are presented as an installation with both color and black and white photographs.

Photography creates a plethora of carbon emissions, such as traveling to locations, shipping, and supplies such as paper and darkroom chemicals, among others. I tried to stay local as much as possible to emit as little carbon as possible. The first part of the project was photographed in Massachusetts while I was attending a residency at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art and while a visiting researcher at Harvard Forest in 2019. The second part of the project was photographed in North Carolina, where I lived for several years until 2022. I would like to thank Prof. Peter White (UNC Chapel Hill), Robert Leverett, the researchers from Harvard Forest and the Southern Research Station for their scientific input.

The carbon emissions created with this project were offset through www.carbonfootprint.com.

“What Remains of the Day – Memories of World War II” explores the aftermath of World War II and the Holocaust on contemporary life by grappling with time and memory through images of places and people. I photograph places that evoke the horrors of the Nazi regime by overexposing the images for one second for every year since the war ended in Europe on May 8, 1945 so that only traces of the resulting images are recorded. For example, photos taken in 2016 (71 years after the end of World War II) were overexposed for 71 seconds. Much like memories, the photographs are fragmented and ambiguous, and some are in color, others in black and white.

I explore people through portraits and interviews. I select people who experienced the war in diverse ways: including Holocaust survivors, Germans, and Allied veterans. These interviews present personal perspectives on the war and the Hitler regime. I have interviewed and taken portraits of 22 people. The portraits were taken in Germany, the UK, the U.S., and the Czech Republic.

I was born and raised in Germany, so I have a personal relationship to the aftermath of WWII and my family’s involvement in the war. I now live in the U.S., which enables me to view my home country through a different lens. My background as urban planner, visual sociologist, and photographer qualifies me to both interview and photograph people and places. With this project, I offer an approach to place, history, and personal trauma that is historical but still resonates in contemporary U.S. and European politics where anti-Semitic, anti-immigrant, and anti-Muslim sentiments have risen. The photos encourage the viewers to think about how the horrors of Fascism and World War II are still relevant today. What will happen to Europe as anti-immigrant right-wing parties become stronger? Is U.S. democracy weakening and heading towards authoritarianism? “What Remains of the Day – Memories of World War II” engages its viewers by forming a bridge between the past and the present.

“Slave Dwellings (Oppressive Architecture)” is a project that examines how architecture functioned as an instrument of control within the plantation system of the American South. It investigates the inhumane living and working conditions imposed on people of African descent and analyzes how architectural forms supported commodity production, enforced social repression, and regulated human life and reproduction.

This project seeks to demonstrate how these structures continue to shape the contemporary landscape, affect present-day communities, and influence our understanding of history. My personal connection to this subject—through my marriage to an African American man whose family was forcibly brought to Virginia—motivates this inquiry. Through this and related projects, I examine my relationship and the intertwined histories of our families in the United States and Germany, addressing themes that include slavery, the Holocaust, and World War II.

All images of former slave dwellings were photographed at dusk in North Carolina and Virginia. Locating these structures has been difficult, as many slave dwellings have been demolished or allowed to deteriorate beyond repair. In contrast, the plantation owners’ “big houses” are often preserved—frequently repurposed as venues for weddings and other events—thereby perpetuating a one-sided account of the history of slavery.

I am deeply grateful to the Slave Dwelling Project and to several individuals committed to this work, particularly Jon Williams, for assisting me in finding these sites. Through the leadership of its founder, Joseph McGill, the Slave Dwelling Project seeks to advance a more honest and inclusive historical narrative. McGill’s mission is to spend a night in every surviving slave dwelling in the United States in order to help preserve these structures and educate the public about their significance.

In 2023, I was commissioned to photograph the remaining three dwellings in Brownsburg, VA, for the exhibition, "Intervowen - Unearthed Stories of Slavery," which is on view through the end of 2026.

Whilst photographing the architectural forms at several former plantations for the Slave Dwellings project, I collected plant specimens - the new inhabitants of these places - and photographed them in the lighting studio. This served as a way to dislocate the specimens from their original spaces. Many of these plants have grown on these former plantations during slavery.

Basement Sanctuaries explores the ways in which superintendents decorate basements of apartment buildings in Northern Manhattan by illuminating the process of migrant adaptation to the metropolis from an intimate perspective. I, a migrant myself, had the idea for this project when apartment-hunting in the neighborhood.
Superintendents are caretakers that usually live in the basements of apartment buildings with more than thirteen units. They are in charge of the building on behalf of the owner, do minor repairs in the apartments and deal with the tenants’ concerns. It is a job that is mainly done by migrants.

In many ways, basements are special sanctuaries for supers and their families. Supers often live in basements that are hidden from the public and from visitors, which creates a form of privacy. However, the basement is also a space of work for supers and their environment is on display for the residents of the building. Under these circumstances, the supers’ decorations function as a territorial claim over the basement’s public/private space. Most of the supers in Northern Manhattan are migrants from Latin America or the Caribbean, and images from their home countries might connect their new home to a past they have left behind. This can be especially important given the grueling nature of their work and the difficulty of establishing oneself in New York City. The repeated themes of cultural, national, and religious origins suggest that similar impulses drive the decoration process for different supers. However, the photos also show the diverse ways in which supers have personalized their work and living spaces and created a uniquely intimate space in the basement of New York City. The images encourage viewers to think in new ways about how space functions in New York City apartment buildings and broaden our understanding of the relationship among migration, semi-public/private space, and the everyday landscape.
The series was published by Schilt Publishing in Spring 2014. Basement Sanctuaries was selected for the LensCulture Emerging Talents 2014 Awards and shortlisted in Professional Architecture Cetegory in the Sony World Photography Awards 2014. It was published in The New York Times, The Guardian, WIRED, mental floss, and many other outlets.

Go for Gold! depicts the transformation of London’s landscape in preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games. It examines how the 2012 Games contribute to the social and geographical transformation of the Lower Lea Valley landscape; a dynamic that occurs every four years across the world in new Olympic cities.

The first series is from 2006-2007 when I photographed the future sports venues of the 2012 Olympic Games. These images capture the last moments of the Lea Valley landscape before construction for the Olympics’ development programme started.Images from this series are primarily of sublime landscapes and industrial spaces. The only indication of how these places will be transformed comes from the titles, which mark the specific sport venue. This ironic disjuncture between the image and the title causes one to think about the construction and disruption that must occur in order to make the Olympics real.
The second series is from 2008-2011 when I photographed around the blue fence that surrounds the Olympic construction site and the high security fence that replaced the blue fence in 2009. These photos show how the Olympic construction site disrupts the connections between residents and their natural and built environment.

The third series is from 2012-2016 for which I documented the sites during the Olympic and Paralympic Games as well as the dismantling of the venues and the transformation into the legacy park.
Go for Gold!’s overarching message is a critique of how the Olympic Games have been transformed from a sporting to an economic event in which urban regeneration plays a major role. According to the promotional material, the Olympics will generate a better environment for local residents through urban regeneration. My work questions this premise/promise and I argue that the Olympics are mainly used to bolster London’s status as a global economic centre at the expense of local inhabitants’ needs. I encourage people to think about how the Olympics help London compete with other global cities to attract media attention, tourist travel, and foreign investment, all for the benefit of large international corporations and not the local population. This trend is also visible in all the other Olympic host cities.
